For many people, finding the right gym can be a daunting task. Traditional gyms are often intimidating, with environments that feel exclusive or unwelcoming, especially for individuals from marginalized communities. For LGBTQ+ individuals, the challenge is even greater, as many gyms don’t offer the inclusive, supportive atmosphere they need to thrive.
At OutWellness, this is different. We offer a safe, welcoming environment where everyone can focus on becoming the best version of themselves, free from judgment. But don’t just take our word for it—here are real stories from OutWellness members who’ve found more than just fitness here; they’ve found belonging.
Finding the Right Gym: What Members Look For
The first step in any fitness journey is finding a gym that feels right for you. For many members of OutWellness, this means looking beyond equipment and pricing. It’s about finding a space that allows you to be yourself.
“When I look for a gym, I look for how comfortable I’m going to be with the person who is helping me get to a better place, physically and mentally. I chose OutWellness because I felt like I could be myself and better myself at the same time,” says one member.
Overcoming Challenges: The Importance of Feeling Supported
Many people face challenges when trying to find a gym where they feel comfortable. Whether it’s feeling out of place or struggling to fit in, the experience can be disheartening. OutWellness members shared similar feelings but found relief when they joined our community.
“It felt like a straight male place for people who were already past a certain point of fitness. I didn’t feel like it was a place where I could learn,” Leah Coleman (she/her) recalled. “But when I came to OutWellness, everything changed. I felt like I could take my time and learn, without being judged.”
For many, OutWellness became a place where they could work out without fear of being excluded or judged.
The Impact of Queer-Focused Group Classes
Group classes at OutWellness offer not just physical benefits but also a sense of belonging and community that is hard to find elsewhere. These classes, designed with the LGBTQ+ community in mind, provide an opportunity to learn new things in a welcoming environment.
“I got interested in queer-focused group classes at OutWellness. I’ve attended the community workout, the trans masc workout, and will also be leading a queer-focused yoga workshop in September,” shared David Peterson. (See video at top of article.)
For those who are nervous about trying a group class for the first time, Peterson’s advice is simple: “Just come to one. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to come back, but give it a try and see how you feel.”
The Role of Community in Fitness
For some people, the sense of community at a gym is as important as the workout itself. Being surrounded by friendly, supportive people can transform the gym experience from something intimidating to something enjoyable.
“The gym is where I meet people,” Amy Tarkington explains. “It’s really hard to make friends as an adult, and for me, the gym is a place where I can connect with people and feel part of a community.”
Not everyone feels the same way, though. Another member shared that while they don’t necessarily seek community at the gym, they want to be in a space where no one is mean to them, even if they don’t interact much. At OutWellness, we respect everyone’s boundaries, whether you want to make friends or simply work out in peace.
Advice for Finding an Inclusive Gym
When it comes to finding the right gym, OutWellness members offer some great advice: “Get a tour, read reviews, and ask your friends.” It’s important to make sure that the gym’s environment feels comfortable to you before committing to it. Another tip is to observe the interactions between members to get a sense of the gym’s vibe.
“I feel like you’ll know if you observe your surroundings before just jumping right in. Take a look around and make sure it’s a comfortable, safe space for you,” Tarkington advises.
